OpenStack load balancing with drag & drop in City Cloud

If you find yourself in need of a load balanced solution for web servers, database servers or any other kind of servers you are only a few clicks away when using City Cloud OpenStack.

Here is an example showing just how easy it is to create a couple of web servers and load balance them in City Cloud OpenStack.



Log in to Citycontrolpanel, expand the Servers section in the menu and click Create server. Give your server(s) a name and choose which data center you want to use. Then configure your servers with an Operating system of your choice and a wide range of other options. In this example we are going to load balance between 2 servers and so we choose to launch 2 instances of the same server that we have configured. When you are done – hit the Create server button.


It only takes a couple of seconds for the servers to spawn and as soon as the status symbol turns green – they are up and running. Bare in mind that the booting sequence might take another 10-30 seconds depending on the Operating system you have chosen. As you can see, these servers have no public IP-addresses (Floating IP) and there is a reason for that. Since we are going to place these servers behind a load balancer, the only machine that needs one is the load balancer.




Now it’s time to create our load balancer. Expand the Network section in the menu and hit Load Balancer then the Create Load Balancer button. Give your load balancer a name and choose the same data center as the servers that needs to be load balanced lives. Click the Create Load Balancer button. In this example we choose to load balance HTTP (port 80) with default settings but you can of course experiment with the different options and algorithms available.



The third and final step is to choose which servers to connect to this load balancer and you will be presented with that screen right after clicking the Create Load Balancer button. Just drag and drop the servers that you want to load balance to the member list of the load balancer and you are good to go. The public IP-address of the load balancer is the public IP-address of the now load balanced web servers.


The load balancer in City Cloud OpenStack is a powerful tool when building your server infrastructure. Right now the drag and drop feature only works for servers located on the same physical location as the load balancer but you can enter and add any IP-address to the load balancers member list. This means that you also can load balance a mix of servers located in all our data centers as well as servers located elsewhere.
