All City Cloud nodes now run OpenStack Mitaka

Our tech department has had a busy couple of weeks performing OpenStack upgrades on all City Cloud nodes. As of Sunday, all City Cloud nodes run OpenStack Mitaka in production!

All upgrades went quite well and in fact we feel like a well oiled machine when it comes to doing them which is a pat on our own shoulders. We also see significant performance improvements in the various features and our environment as a whole.

As usual with the OpenStack upgrades, most things happen back-end and as usual we never release new features to our users unless we deem them ready.


Lets just get one thing straight

In each release each of all OpenStack releases, such as Mitaka in this case, projects in the “big tent” is getting new features as well as improvements in various ways. In CityCloud OpenStack this means that all OpenStack projects that we have implemented and activated will get the latest features and improvements.

With every release all projects mature and maturity is an important parameter for us when we make the decisions of which features (projects) we choose to integrate in CityCloud OpenStack.

Here are a couple of things that will be in focus now that we have successfully upgraded all City Cloud nodes to Mitaka.



When upgrading to Mitaka we took things one step forward in automation and towards our goal with automatic rolling upgrades. Our playbooks are getting better and better and include more and more features. We love automation and we love Ansible so best believe we are looking in to this continuously.


LBaaS v2

We started looking in to this feature back when we did the Liberty Upgrade but haven’t had the time to implement it into City Cloud OpenStack. This year we hope things are different and that we can launch the LBaaS v2 feature in the GUI. Read more about the feature and the beauty of combining features in this article.


Container Orchestration

Magnum is an interesting feature that is all about container orchestration which brings us back to automatisation and our love for it. You have always been able to run containers in OpenStack manually, but with Magnum you can start orchestrating your setup and for example spin up your container cluster, Kubernetes, Docker Swarm or Mesos, through native OpenStack Magnum APIs.
